orange crush

January 26, 2012

i still take selective commissions over here at cosymakes. this one goes to a very special family. the gentleman has bought numerous hats from me over the years. his first was from my very first handmade arcade here in pittsburgh, then he moved away and continued to buy.

so when he and his wife recently had their first baby, he requested a matchingish mom/baby duo – round hats with an orange base. i also made the baby one so it can roll up for the rest of this winter, and roll down and fit better for next winter. having just had a baby myself, how could i refuse!

mama orange gust

the color is a recent falkland fiber club colorway with an tiny bit of a couple extra colors spun in. the charcoal brim is some commercial wool and the embroidery is recycled sweater wool/angora.  the baby hat also has hand dyed recycled sweater yarn stripes and commercial wool stripes.

here’s an out-take of malachi and i modeling them when i had the first idea down, without the thicker swirls and snowflakes. not the most attractive picture, but it’s in focus! and he looks cute ;)

baby hats!

January 24, 2012

well, i’ve decided to spread the love! i’m going to give away all of the hats… including the two i accidentally included that are the larger size (6-18 mo. whoops!). i’ll email everyone and let them pick which they would like, so it may be a bit of a process, but you’ll be hearing from me!  i loved hearing about who you all would wrap in woolie love.  so sweet.  it also makes me sad i can’t give all of you baby hats.

because it needed a picture! this hat also never sold, but it was destined for my little beanling

falkland fiber club feature

January 12, 2012

or, rather, featuring Amy and her amazing spinning and knitting!  amy has finished a lot of projects from my fiber club and i love watching them come about… especially since i don’t have time to spin and knit every colorway myself!

go see her ravelry pattern page for much much more lovely knit handspun. so inspiring. and note that she is super organized and has pics of the fiber and the handspun usually!  i love that.

p.s. and speaking of, there are still 3 slots in the falkland fiber club left! they’ll be up until monday if you want to nab one.

it’s a new year…

January 3, 2012

i plan to…

knit ben and i colorwork mitts (not matching)… and publish the crossbow mitt pattern (and maybe the pattern from our mittens?) things i will learn from these 3 pairs shown below that 1) i have a tight gauge when knitting colorwork in the round – go up two needle sizes and 2) i have size medium around hands, but length is size large.

colorwork mittens

learn to steek – maybe by making a colorwork baby sweater design? i’ve been browsing – a little bit of colorwork here and here. and a lot of colorwork here, here, and here. plus this cute cute bee one.  may have to do adrian’s tutorial to learn the steek first though.

start xmas knitting early, with the bean existing and me not selling hats any more, i should just knit what i like for who i like!  fun.  christmas is an all knit affair over here, unless we stumble across something better.  i feel very lucky to have such inspiring and wool worthy folks to knit for.

new years resolutions...

finish my sweater that is 80% done. stopped knitting it around when i got pregnant, and now it’s my size again.

and lastly, get some more patterns done in my own yarns.

new years resolutions

do you have any crafty new years thoughts?

pattern giveaway – mixed knits!

December 5, 2011

the first of the december giveaways! i’m not sure why, but i’m always in the mood to give something away in december. the holidays?  the weather?  the knitting for family and friends?  i’m not sure… but here’s the deal.

to enter this giveaway, you need to respond to this post by showing me you or your family (or someone!) in some handknit woolies that you’ve made. i’ve already shown you our family in knit hats, so i’ll kick things off with this pic of m and his papa.

oh!  and tell me about the knits.  ben’s hat is this hat from my book and a couple of posts back you can read about the bean’s aviatrix, made from my handspun.

2 folks will win copies of the springling shawl pattern

ann’s scarf

December 3, 2011

ann's scarf

one holidayish gift down.  this scarf is for ben’s professor who saw him through his masters and his playing certificate.  and got him the his job as adjunct professor.  she has been fabulous and deserves nothing less than kidsilk haze. also, she loves the color red.

ann's scarf

this was my first time knitting with kidsilk haze and it was lovely.  i did have to dig out some pointier needles than i started with and thank goodness i did.  i might not have survived otherwise ;)  i do believe i’ll knit this scarf again in my snapdragon light fingering.  it will be a sample and maybe a free pattern with a yarn purchase?  really i’m itching to use this lace pattern in a circular shawl, so we’ll see.  first, christmas gifts must be knit!

ann's scarf

i used a size 7 or 8 needle and altered the lace pattern a wee bit.  all i have to say is thank goodness i changed lace patterns to something more baby brain friendly.  that way it didn’t take me 2 more years to finish. raveled here.

the end of an era

November 15, 2011

2006
from 2006

i’ve decided to stop selling hats and thus to re-home the hats i already have. i took all of my baby/kid hats to mama knitting today and got rid of a bunch. these hats that have been just sitting around are now keeping folks warm and toasty. and i get to see them being worn which makes me very happy.

hats 2007
from 2007

that said, this is kind of a sad day. it marks the end of an era. my first creative knitting. my book deal, which was based on that knitting.  the playing with texture and color that won’t happen as much anymore.

hats 2008
from 2008

but at handmade arcade this weekend, i sold not. one. hat. i re-homed three. i did, however, sell a bunch of yarn. and the place the hats took at my table could be filled with samples of my designs with my yarn.

the creativity that started in the hats has been slowly being funneled into designing anyhow. so i am saying farewell to my original hat business. CosyKnits (literally) and cosymakes is now a design/dye/teach business.  you’ll probably still see some hats, but way less than before and with intentional recipients.  i’m hoping to teach some creative hat knitting classes, too.

p.s. there also may be a hat give-away or two here on this blog. and there will probably be time for some old hats to be made into patterns also.  you know, as much time as you have with a 4.5 month old ;)
