too much

July 17, 2008

carbon dioxide/for me to breathe.  i woke up this morning with that lyric in my head.  we could say ‘too much handspun yarn/for me to name.’  here’s the next batch, all spun at the really long artists market with the new wheel.  but i’ll not make you name it yet.

newbies

i do have to say that you all did a splendid job proposing names for that last batch of yarns that i may just extend the larger discount when we do this name game next week.  that said, ben and i had a difficult time deciding what to call several of the skeins because we liked so many entries.  you can see the names we finally chose here by clicking on the pictures.

drying out of doors

tomorrow? a fairly finished knit with some advice asked. stay tuned!

southside exposed artists market

July 15, 2008

the first day:

by the second day, i had the tables in an L shape, but one of the irritations of this show was that they had free space in between the back of booths that they didn’t shut off, so most people walked up the middle of the tents (i.e. the back side alley) when we were supposed to be facing the other way.

i’ve found that leaving the hats in a garbled mess invites people to dig through them :) although it was a bit hot for even that on saturday.

not the best show in the world. fun friday, too long saturday (12 hrs!!), and okay sunday. not enough money made for me to want to go back for the price of the show, however, there must be something said for being local and giving out business cards. i told at least 10 people interested that i teach at the lys, and that was good.  i also made some other contacts that may come to something.

the new wheel?  lovely.  if nothing else, i adore it for drawing people in to chat with me and talking about woolie things.  i also have to tell you that i think i know every style that is fashionable this season just by watching the way too hip people who shop in this area of town stroll by.

blurry alpaca rainbow

July 14, 2008

i totally stole this photo from leethal… but i’ve a new pet skein. i could stare at it and fondle it’s alpaca goodness all day.

more photos here

i can’t decide whether to keep it as a pet, or to ball it up and knit it into a pet i could wear. life is so hard.

qiviut

July 11, 2008

there are some benefits to living in alaska, not the least of which is knitting nearly year round :) and the infamous dividend.

one such benefit came when my mother-in-law katie, found advertised in the local newspaper raw qiviut.

raw qiviut

qiviut is the hair of the musk ox. katie bought 1 lb off of a graduate student who, while studying birds on the tundra, picked it up off of the ground where it landed when the oxen molted. apparently, there was a herd that hung out on the tundra where he did his research.

katie took it to the weaving/spinning shop in town and was told that we needed to remove the lightweight and heavyweight guard hairs and so she got to work.

lightweight guard hairs – picture showing the different colors here.  these can be mixed with merino.  the current plan is a pair of mittens.
lightweight guard hairs

heavyweight guard hairs – here’s a picture with a bit of down we plan to go back and rescue.  we are unaware of anything you can do with these.
heavyweight guard hairs

katie bought the book arctic lace and did a bit of research on her own. she found out that qiviut can be processed by someone else, but you need 600 lbs of it!!  if you know anything about the price of qiviut, you might know that most people could never afford this much and frankly, i’ve no idea who has this much to begin with.  the soft, downy coat is even too fragile to be carded by hand, and so she sorts it.

so – it’s slow going, but she is enjoying the work. the goal is lace and so today we ordered her a featherweight spindle to practice spinning lace weight with some merino. supposedly qiviut is 8 times warmer than wool and will be perfect for smoke rings and the such.  you may remember how much katie likes smoke rings from my intro to this pattern.  i love that there are fibers warm enough that holey knitting is even super warm. a bulky qiviut would be near unwearable.

there are more pictures in my photostream and i would highly recommend clicking the little button above the photos that says all sizes to get the idea.  personally, i just want to climb into the bag of down.

here’s a good article telling you a lot more about it as a knitting fiber, if you’re interested.

the new kid on the block

July 10, 2008

showed up yesterday – when i had waited around all day – 10 min. before i had to leave. argh.

new!!

so, of course, i stayed up really late spinning on her.

kromski sonata

i love her. my first brand spanking new wheel, and she’s a traveler* at that, which is why we got her… but i’m also a complete skeptical of her. she’s almost too easy to spin on. all of the other wheels around here are temperamental single treadles… and i must admit that they match my personality a bit better than the newbie. should your spinning wheel match your temperament? that’s the question. i’m sure we’ll get along fine once we get used to each other :D

she showed up just in time for the really crazy hours of the festival i’ll be at this weekend. with me at the festival will be my only knitting relative – my mother-in-law katie – and this heap o’ yarn as well as ALL my stock of yarns and hats and whatever else i have! i get a whole tent and plan to make use of it.

new yarns

you, my dears, will also be benefiting from my first rejection to an indie craft fair. would have thought the having a book would have helped, but apparently not ;) for you this means you might actually get to purchase some of my yarn!!** i have no craft fairs next month and way way way too much stuff on the table for the small one i have in a couple of weeks so i will be putting lots of yarns up on etsy… oh and the hats i’ve been slacking on entering will be put up too. if teaching doesn’t keep me too busy, maybe you’ll be lucky and see some dyed roving go up too. oh la la!

just as a side note, i’m not too bummed about the fair because no craft fairs in august means i might actually get to go camping this summer which makes me more than happy.

*folds up and fits in a backpack!!
**just kidding – you know i’d sell it to you if you really wanted it, right?

teaching!!

July 9, 2008

recent – as of last thursday – i am now teaching knitting as well as spinning at the yarn store!! i love teaching, so this is a very welcome expansion of my job description.  i also feel like teaching is a big part of who i am as a person… so it will help to make the fiber arts job more whole too.

me teaching melissa, my friend’s daughter
teaching melissa

the classes don’t appear to be up on the website yet, but i’m doing a baby surprise sweater/february baby sweater class just to get people started and help them to understand EZ, beginning knitting, creative accessory design (based on my book!!) and something this store calls ‘Knit with Cosy’ which is essentially, get help on whatever you need help on or continue another class or learn anything i know that you want to know… you get the picture!  and, of course, i’m still teaching spinning.

there’s also another Knit One opening in Cranberry/Mars and I’ll be there every other Friday! I’m sooo excited to be teaching again. huzzah!

jellyfish hat

July 8, 2008

a root vegetable hat (ravelry link)

jelly fish hat

ingredients in story form:
sarah put on her blog that she had colinette afghan leftovers that she wanted to pass along to someone who could use them. i can always use scraps, so i emailed that if no one else wanted them, i’d take them. well, not only were they not scraps to me, there were enough of 2 colors of mohair that i will be able to make whole hats out of!! i started this right after i got sarah’s generous package, but just recently went on a finishing spree and gave it (and all the other hats you’ve seen as of late) the embellishment.

jelly fish hat

ben insisted this one was the jelly fish hat and i must agree with him. at the vancouver aquarium, there is no shortage of fascinating jelly fish to look at and that was one of the last things i did before i moved away from there.  being from a land-locked state, i find the ocean totally fascinating.

and lastly this button is of interest – it is celluloid from the 1920s and 30s, a fact which i would have never ever known, had i not purchased a bunch of them from vintage necessities.  i so wish i knew more about my own button collection!

word-along

July 6, 2008

yay! i’m so excited that bunch of you are interested in doing a word-along. i made a thread in the knit one, embellish too group over on ravelry. you are perfectly welcome to join the group or just chat in the thread. i’m excited to see what everyone else does.

4 lbs, 4 oz!!

while dyeing this 4 lbs 4 oz (!!) of roving on independence day… i started knitting my first hat to embroider on for the word-along… although there’s always the danger of embroidering on a hat i’ve already knit too. one thing that i like about words is that they have less masculine or feminine connotations – so they’re great for hats men can wear too. as you all know, i’m always looking for those.

a lot of roving II

a lot of roving I

these rovings should last me a while :) although i have already spun one up.
