done and done

July 29, 2008

goodbye domestic roving!! 4 oz bundles.

now on to my real goal for the business… local, breed specific, and farm wool. the far right is local animal-friendly shetland that i dug out of the stash. the sheep’s name? jorja :D

tomorrow we’re off to do some much needed relaxing, hiking (is it still hiking when there aren’t any mountains?), and swimming while camping for a few days.  and on the way home, small town thrift stores and farmer’s markets. have a great week and i’ll reconnect on the weekend.

thrifty, gifty

July 23, 2008

ben and i took katie to the airport today and went by the red, white and blue thrift store on our way back. i found some super good finds.

two bags of buttons are at the top of my list!! woot!!
thrifted

and some on cards
thrifted

plus the craziness of finding ROVING at the thrift store!! happened once before even.
thrifted!
sheepstone natural fibers from darlington, pa. one whole pound of the ugly tweed – i plan to dye it – and less of the nice brown.

i also found some sweaters for ripping, although they’re not so exciting for me to take a pic of them. while katie was here, we also hit a thrift store where i found, 8 skeins of this yarn
thrifted
it’s more green and less blue, but lovely and heathered. Reynolds Versailles – 90% virgin wool and 10% vinyon

what’s vinyon? wikipedia to the rescue. i think the use of vinyon makes this yarn quite old. i was super happy to find this because, frankly, i very rarely find yarn at the thrift stores here.

as for gifted, a sheep mug.
gifted
handmade in ireland. ben’s been drinking coffee out of it. one of the monks at the monastery where ben plays the organ found it in the monastery kitchen and thought i needed it. cute cute.

and lastly, i got a set of dressers from my friend maggie’s aunt with this on it
gifted

gifted
very exciting. i’m thinking it must have been the logo of a furniture maker at some point. i saw it a week after i got this dresser on a mirror at our local building recycling place – construction junction.

time to go sort some buttons!  hurrah!  look for dyeing soon, the roomies are on vacation.

snowberry in the dead of summer

July 23, 2008

the names are in! the mother-in-law had the final say on this one. once again, so many good names to choose from.  click on that link and check it out! if your name won and you want the yarn, give me an email or a comment.

and here’s a hat
snowberry hat

i made this one at a craft fair last winter, but it languished without photographs.
ingredients:
hand dyed new wool
recycled sweater angora blend

adult size small (a bit tight and short on my medium head)

i love how the pompom is squiggly.

have a great day!

signed, sealed, and delivered…

July 22, 2008

to the yarn store today. i think i need to make a sample of at least one (bsj or baby sweater on two needles) for the other yarn store i teach at (knit one is opening another store north of the city). apparently two people have signed up for my first class up there!! yay!

the best color-wise
baby sweater on two needles

bit of a closer look at the little buttons
baby sweater on two needles

close-up

photography-wise, this color drives me crazy.  so you got the best of the best, with my foot and a tomato plant to boot.

you still have the chance to name some yarn here if you’re so inclined ;)  i’d love your input

and in february lady sweater news, i’ve officially run out of yarn before i was done. so instead of cute, i’m going for a bit more technicolor dream coat meets lace. i’m thinking of using different shades of green to extend the cuffs to 3/4 length and then putting green buttons on to draw it all together. we’ll see. ideas are still percolating. i’ve seen too many versions of the sweater with just over the elbows 3/4 length which i will not be doing.

have a good tuesday! i’m taking my mother and the qiviut to show and tell at knitting group. should be fun :)

Quick~! II

July 21, 2008

you know the rules! but if you’re new and haven’t palyed before, i’ll refer you to here. and although i don’t mention it, you do get a couple bucks off of shipping to elsewhere outside the US and the *special* still holds. this game ends on tuesday at 9 eastern standard time, with names up wednesday morning. if your name gets picked and you want the yarn, either leave a comment or email me at cosyknitsliterally (!at) gmail (dot!) com on wednesday… after that, it’s up for grabs to everyone else, a craft fair next weekend and then etsy!
if you want to play, you can either comment here with the numbers, or click the pics into flickr and comment there.

1
what do i remind you of?

2
what would you call me?

3
i could use a name

4 the first skein spun on the new wheel :)  matches self striping blueberry pie from the last batch
name me!

5
i'd love a name...

6  self striping navajo plied – i think it goes purple-green-gold-green-purple, but i don’t quite remember
what do i remind you of?

7 turquoise is like a ghost to my camera
name me!

and two bonus skeins just to show you all -
the one i’m keeping which i couldn’t get a good picture of if i begged it.  i kind of wanted to keep it anyhow, so good excuse. it’s slated for an idea that might be part of a future book proposal, so you may not see it again anytime soon.

)

and the one my mother-in-law watched me spin at the craft fair and now is buying – she named it wheat and honey.  same colorway as the thick and thin above.

twirly girlies…

July 19, 2008

first of all, thank you for all of the great advice on the buttons!! and compliments on the little sweater.  i’m going to compromise – the little olive ones with the flower one on top.*  we’ll see.  i’m going to do some blocking first and then i’ll show you the finished finished product.

yesterday, before it got too hot, i sat on the porch and finished the first twirlies since the book one (ravelry link). both are made to what the book calls size small, which i think fits my size medium head just fine, thank you very much (22 in. around).

blue twirly bonnet

i love how old fashioned these look!! i think the glasses might help ;)

ingredients:
my hand dyed handspun yarn
and one big old button which needed a good home

no embroidery on this one since the button is so spectacular.  i really enjoy doing this pattern in handspun yarns, so if you’re thinking of trying it, consider giving some handspun a try.

have a great weekend!  more name game come monday.

*EDIT cheryl was over today looking through the button collection for some buttons and we decided on the shiny little olive ones… finished pics soon!

green apple february baby sweater

July 18, 2008

i took a break from my lady sweater to make the baby sweater it is based on. it’s a sample for a class i’m slated to teach at the the shop. i also delivered this bsj there for a bit.

february baby sweater

ingredients:
recycled banana republic sweater – lambswool/nylon/cashmere
so soft and so baby

another totally fun and ingenious knit brought to you by Elizabeth Zimmermann.

now to the issue at hand… which buttons do i use?

sorry for the bad photo. the colors are more accurate in the top one.
february baby sweater

i’m leaning toward the ones you see lined up here, but the card of little shiny olive green ones are tempting me. this sweater is so cute and old-timey that the little shiny buttons might have been made for it back in the day. i’m also quite enamored with the little flower at the top of the current row. hmmm. any opinions?
