in the wool, dyeing

June 29, 2008

100% merino – about 4 oz each – these two are my faves
merino

with a little shetland in the front that is mine… very tropical
merino

all together they kind of clash. the merino is for the shop because they sell out as soon as i dye it! the basket has been nearly empty for a couple of weeks now… and the little bob of shetland is for me – as is the shetland below.  i think it’s about four ounces.  when i spin it up, i’ll let you know what the sheep’s name is too :)

shetland

dyed when i was sick and probably shouldn’t have been dyeing. i always get mad when i’m only body sick because i’m not getting as much done as i want to. my brain is firing full speed ahead and the poor body can barely keep up! anyhow, that’s mostly over now and i’m preparing for a 3 day craft fair in a couple of weeks (and answering your emails from the last week). should be an interesting one… i also have a couple of commissions that i hope to show you soon. hope you have a nice relaxing sunday!

in sickness and in health

June 28, 2008

i will spread the craft :)

alisa and her friend chris came over in early evening so that i could help her get started on her on the new/old spinning wheel that she found in an antique store a couple of weeks ago.

sorry for the blurry pic, but i hate flash… her first skein!
alisa's first skein

here’s a less blurry one
alisa's first skein

doesn’t she look pleased as punch? she picked it up like that (snaps fingers), and then admitted to being an armchair spinner. hurray alisa! to many many more skeins.

just a note on the wheel… it’s an ashford traditional, which is just what she wanted. but i don’t think that you know that i also spin on an ashford traditional. a lot of newish spinners end up with these because they’ve been made since 1938. if you click this link, you can see all of the versions.

and just so that you know. i have one from 1982, alisa’s is from 1964, and gwen and lauren both have ones from 1975. these wheels do get around and they’re a good workhorse wheel to start on, plus they have an elegant, traditional spinning wheel look which i think has some charm.

i spy…

June 26, 2008

with my little eye – some more knits!! sorry for all of the short posts and lack of email responses this week, i’m feeling a bit under the weather.

for the blog

here is shana’s finished handspun hat, more photos of it, and, if you missed the last post, the yarn and roving. she also just got her dissertation bound. yipee!

emily has made another fabulous hat. love the color combo on this one and the buttons are the perfect!

leethal spun and knit this neckscarf out of some alpaca she inherited. it must just be lush up against the skin. get the whole story on why she has so much alpaca here.

lots of fun stuff is brewing in pgh this weekend. i’ll be hawking my wares over here. if you’re in town, you should stop by and say ‘hi!’ i’m off to dye some wool. have a great day!

ravelry group

June 23, 2008

i’ve been avoiding starting any groups having to do with myself on ravelry, but when someone asked a question about doing a jogless join, i thought this was a technique that was relevant to the book that might come up again and again…

banner

so made a ravelry group.
feel free to join!

and if anyone wants to make a better banner, feel free.

spinning, knitting, and crocheting – oh my!

June 22, 2008

i never remember to take pictures of anything except wool – so i was super impressed that i thought to take photos during spinning/knitting/eating group this evening. we start at the yarn store and then usually end up with food at my house.

here’s early on:

lauren (crocheting), gwen (knitting), and the blogless but fiber-ful rachel (holding roving, although too tired to spin).

one of the first things rachel ever said to me was, “why would anybody want to dye their own yarn?!?” and now, guess what she wants to do… i’m like a disease :D

rich

and later on, we found the box of book knits in the room upstairs and this is what happened

they were honestly putting on as many knits as they could at one time. i just couldn’t resist taking photos.

on the menu? always bread and cheese, a lovely salad with local CSA lettuce, wild rice, and a pepper, yam, and white bean ragout, and strawberries, brownies and whipped cream for dessert. yum. fiber and more fiber :) and friends. what more could one ask for?

BSJ – BSJ…

June 21, 2008

makes me feel like i’m chanting for a sports team. i went to the UofM – UofM…

bsjs!!

ahem. anyhow. i made two baby suprise jackets (ravelry link) in the last short while and can i just say that this pattern is brilliant!! i love scrappy things to begin with and this is the perfect scrappy project, since you can change colors at any time and still have it look great because the last rows go all the way down the front and around the back. on top of that, it’s fun to knit, i love garter stitch, and it’s cute – cute – cute! i finished these two up last night.

this autumnal bsj was made while watching my booth at a craft fair… mostly all in one day and much of it done while walking around or chatting with other craftspeople. i did find that i had to sit down and read the instructions once in a while ;)

autumnal baby surprise jacket

worstedish weight on size 6 needles.

ingredients:
my handspun wool (thick and thin) – this one had been around for a while – here’s the yarn and here’s the roving
1970′s hunter orange pull skein wool from the goodwill in missoula
finished with some recycled sweater wool because i used up both of the others

by the way, i do have a wee one in mind for this one. apparently, if i knit it, the wee ones will be provided.

autumnal baby surprise jacket close-up

the blue forest bsj was started right after the first one. did i mention this pattern is also addictive? i did most of it at a party with the people ben went to germany/austria with. it is a wild party in which you can almost knit a whole baby sweater during it…

blue forest baby surprise jacket

sport and dk weight wool on size 6 needles.

ingredients:
two mill ends from mountain colors
my hand dyed recycled sweater wool

this one is a spare. my plan is to always keep one of these around just in case – cause those babies are, you know, surprising :)

blue forest baby surpise armpit

i’m not yet sure what i’m doing for these two for fasteners. the autumnal one has button holes, but i’m considering either a couple of loops with buttons or loops with crocheted buttons. the button holes ended up in an awkward place with the color change, so i think i like it a bit more open. any suggestions? either way, neither of these will get fasteners until they’re on their way out into the world… so i declare them done!

blue forest baby suprise garter

last time i talked about the bsj, a lot of people said they wanted to make one soon too…  anyone made one? how’d it go? feel free to link to your project in the comments if you did!  i’d love to see them.
