May 30, 2008

i was tagged by ska mama for this meme, so i thought i’d oblidge. mid afternoon, it’s sunny. i’ve been knitting a bsj instead of getting ready for the craft fair and the book release party.

1. What was I doing 10 years ago?

ten years ago i was still in school at the university of montana – undergrad, studying art, english and teaching. i was also working part time at a fabulous independent used and bargain bookstore and somewhere around then i moved out of my parents house and was living with my friends in a old ramshackle house in downtown missoula for dirt cheap rent. it used to be a commune and had a home made 10 toothbrush holder in the bathroom when we moved in. can’t tell you how not insulated that house was and how really really cold it was in the winter. i should have thought more about that before i decided that drawing myself nude in november and december was a good idea.

2. What are 5 things on my to-do list for today (not in any particular order)?
clean yoga studio
mail packages
work on bsj
pack up for craft fair
eat, drink, be merry, and sign books at the book release party

3. Snacks I enjoy.
fresh fruit and veggies (especially straight out of the garden or from a farmer’s market)
popcorn – but only the way my husband makes it
ants on a log
chocolate
cake

4. Things I would do if I were a billionaire.
feed people.
support the arts.
work towards re-structuring of society to less car-based and more community based.

5. Places I have lived
the rocky mountains
the cascade mountains on the coast
the hills of south western pennsylvania

6. Jobs I’ve had.
camp counselor/kitchen aide
hostess at the montana pie co.
sales person etc. at the university of montana bookstore – the art section
clerk and associate manager at The Book Exchange
self-employed fiber artist combined with the odd job here and there and probably to be mixed with a house cleaning job very soon

7. Peeps I want to know more about:
although i will respond when others call on me to meme, i am a shy memer when it comes to calling on others… if you’d like to share with the rest of us, feel free.

have a great weekend!!

p.s. if you’re interested, the book is now back in stock over in the shop!

do you have a fabulous local yarn store?

May 28, 2008

hi all, thanks for your lovely comments on my blog over the last few posts! unfortunately i’m a bit backlogged in my responses, but i’ll get there :)

variations on a turnip

on to business. currently almost all of the projects from the book are at my local yarn store in preparation for the book release party. yesterday, during knitting group, christine convinced me to send it out as a trunk show. so this is a call for yarn stores. if you would like to see the knits from this book and are a yarn store owner or a person who has a fabulous local yarn store that just needs this trunk show, please feel free to be in touch and we’ll see if we can make it happen. this will be a show that is more likely to sell books than yarn, but i will include yarn substitutions for my own hand dyed and handspun yarns wherever i can.

root vegetable hat

i call these root vegetable shaped hats the hat that started it all… they are by far my most asked for pattern and one of my first ‘designs’ perhaps? all variations that i do come from playing with needle sizes from 7-9, changing yarns and changing the number of increases. there is also a flat top variation

back alley hat aka the knapweed hat

and a pointy worsted variation

sweet pea hat

two days of…

May 27, 2008

crazy!
and no knitting if you can believe that!
i worked 23 hours of the last 2 days counting yarn. ben came home saturday night and his jet lagged and sleep lagged self barely interrupted the schedule. it has been a veritable factory over here of signing, packaging, and getting things ready to mail. a bunch will be going out today. more tomorrow. i know you expected nothing else ;)

here’s one of my favorite book projects:

twirly girl bonnet

a happy accident, as are many great projects. this one is made from handspun from folktale fibers. it was actually a ball that she threw in as a bonus with the book yarn… but i could not resist the lure of handspun. two of my friends with lots of long hair tried this on and one put her hair in a bun at the neck and one pulled it through the hole and both looked fabulous. a good solution for hair without the 1980s headband look that i try so hard to avoid. personally, i LOVE bonnets, so you know i’ll be making more of these.

lookin’ for a book on etsy??

May 24, 2008

so… i put two books on etsy in celebration on the release day and they sold instantly.

my friend christine saw it in a barnes and noble.

here’s the book project that i decided to keep.

communion mitts

as to the autographed books, i’m in a quandry. my first priority is to get out these pre-orders. i have around 50 copies at my house right now, 20 more copies on order from my publisher and i will be ordering 30 more copies on monday… but that means that if i were to put it up on etsy, you may not get the book for a while. so. the story is that if you want a book and just want to buy it now rather than watching the shop, i’ll put one up for you as RESERVED but on your end, you’ll have to be patient and get it when you get it. sorry about that and thanks for your interest and excitement!! it’s all a bit overwhelming – in a good way :)

ATTENTION! book pre-orders

May 21, 2008

lookee what showed up in the mail today :)

out on friday!!

which is VERY exciting… and which means you should maybe send me an email if you have any instructions about whom or how you would like the book signed. otherwise, i’ll assume it’s for you and sign accordingly.

so, i got to thinking about mailing all these books and found out they can be mailed book rate for about $2.50, but they can’t be mailed book rate with yarn in them. i’m going to make an executive decision and send all of the US ones by book rate and instead of the 50 yards of recycled wool (which it kills me not to send because it just goes so well with the book) i will provide a 10% off coupon for the shop with a promise that i’ll make some more color kits that you could use to make the book hats soon. there are also single patterns you can purchase there. if you really really need a bit of recycled sweater wool, please email me and i may make an exception. also, if any of you international folks would prefer the coupon to yarn, let me know.

that said, i am working at the yarn store thursday, friday, saturday, sunday, and monday (good timing, i know) so i’ll be mailing the US ones in little batches at night using the automated mail thing. good times! international packages, i’m sorry but you must go out a bit later since the automatic machine doesn’t do international… this also isn’t all of the book pre-orders. i should be getting some more within the next week. thanks for your patience and your support!

i am not only touched that you answered my call for pre-orders, but it has seriously made a difference and allowed me to spend at least one more month working as a full time artist!! thank you and thank you again.

growth

growth hat

i finished up this one specifically for the may market. i figured plant themed would be good. it’s unfortunate that i didn’t have more time to prepare because i didn’t even have any hats with trees on them!

growth hat

ingredients:
hunter orange thrifted 1970′s pull skein wool
embroidery – inherited wool/alpaca
yellow orange is this, which i’ve been wanting to use ever since i bought it from a downsizing knitter/weaver in my neighborhood.

adult small/medium.

growth hat

i went for more of a block print look with this one, using less hand dyed and more solid wools.  i like the way it turned out… subtle and dramatic all at the same time.

may market at phipps

May 20, 2008

basil, rosemary

it was raining and windy the whole weekend!! we were outside.
so. freaking. cold. i barely made back my table fee, but i did
1) have a nice time hanging out with lynne and the lady from construction junction
2) give business cards to people who actually live in and around my neighborhood (people know i exist! woot!)
3) talk up my book and my book release party
4) buy a bunch of lovely lovely plants (rose de berne, black prince, and sungold tomatoes, african, red and normal basil, curly parsley, rosemary, and dill) along with some old metal wash bins to plant things in (all of which i shouldn’t have bought because i was making no money, just spending)
and
5) eat half a lemon through an old fashioned peppermint stick every day and one of the infamous grilled mushroom sandwiches. lynne’s mom told her that the mushroom sandwich tradition at the may market is older than she is (she’s in her late forties…)!! and one woman of a similar age who came by my booth while i was eating my lemon said that she remembered eating them when she was 5.

and i managed to not get sick, which is miraculous.

so that’s the market. i sold some yarn and some mitts, but not enough to justify me doing this market again. it also means i need to make more mitts. i, of course, have been mostly knitting hats* :) mitts are like pulling teeth…

* understatement. i’ve been knitting a TON of hats in the last two weeks. we’ll have to have some hat parading soon.
