new deal

the name game.

the name game

i really enjoy having you all name the yarns. it makes me think of everyone in their context. like we all having images, memories, colors that spark a particular spark with us. i know sometimes it’s not so deep – but so many of the names you come up with i would never even think of!

so here’s a bit of incentive :)

if i choose your name for a yarn and you would like to buy it, you get 5% off and free shipping to the US and Canada and reduced shipping by a couple of dollars to everywhere else. i think the naming will be a flickrly thing, since each yarn has its own particular picture over there. so comment there with suggestion and flickrmail or email me at my cosyknitsliterally address if you want the yarn after i choose a name. if i meld two names into one, either of you will be eligible.
i will now withhold the choosing of a name for at least 12 hours so that everyone who wants to can have a chance to play.

all this is to say – i appreciate you all! thanks for playing along with my hair-brained schemes!

ERRATA: as i watch all of the suggestions come in, i know i’m not going to be able to pick… so, i’ve decided that the final word on the final name of each yarn is going to go to ben (with me harassing from the left).

time to…

January 31, 2008

today i have a random day off of work cause the store hasn’t been so busy this week. how do i plan to fill it (besides showing you all tempting pictures of wool and making you help me name them…)?

name me!

time to heal… yesterday, on my way to work, a delivery truck clipped a big heavy garbage can and it tipped over into my leg. ouch. now i have a huge bruise. what a strange life i lead. ben was with me and we were rather confused because it all happened so quickly. the good thing was he grabbed the garbage can before the big heavy thing rolled down the hill and into traffic! wrong place at the wrong time and in my lingo *very* random.

what do i remind you of?

time to actually keep up with the etsy shop… including throwing you all a couple skeins of the new yarn before i take them off to market. i’ve been very bad while working on the new legs of the business with keeping up with it. i promise you’ll be glad you waited with lots of yarns and some patterns close to being put up.

what should my name be?

time to finish… the shawl i’m making as a commission and finish a second movie knit. by the way – thank you all for the make-me-blush compliments on that piece of work. it’s kind of surreal.

name me!

time to start… at least one commission that i’ve been hankering to get done soon and maybe another hat to be put up in pattern form.

now it’s time for you to go name these new yarns if they make you think of anything! and for me to have a late breakfast… ahem… brunch.
have a good day!

what should i be called?

teaser, not trailer

the super secret knitting alluded to last week?

secret knitting

i’m knitting for a major motion picture! the costume designer and her assistant came into the yarn store the other day looking for someone to knit for them. i was thinking of who would want to knit for them and we were sort of waiting for my co-worker/boss who was helping someone else to join in the conversation.  finally, i’d felt we waited long enough and asked what they needed knit and it just happened to be my speciality! wheee!  it just worked out.

yep. and the knit one community has got it bad – star struck! vivian brought in cupcakes and balloons on the day it happened and started the grape vine churning. more than one person thought i was pregnant :)

nobody spins

January 29, 2008

it appears that nobody has any other spinning type blogs they read… there sure is a shortage. it’s more dire than i thought :) on the other hand, i find spinners also tend to be knitters – so the blogs might be a bit more like this blog.

here’s some more of the newly spun yarn to keep you occupied. if you’d like to help in the naming, click through the photo to flickr and leave a comment.

what would you call me?

what do i remind you of?

i could really use a name...

name me!

name me!

name me!

i find at least one of these quite ugly… but i’m not sharing which one. every time i do that someone jumps to defend the defenseless yarn with how beautiful it is :D

spinnerly blogs

January 28, 2008

i have been nominated (twice if you can believe it!) by lola of the black sheep blog and mick of much-adored for the ‘you make my day award. i am honored! thank you both. since’ i just recently did the “makes me smile” award here… so i was going to bow out on this one… but instead i think i’ll give you some of my favorite spinnerly blogs.

dyed in the wool handmade
folktale fibers
hello yarn
knitterly things
knitters anonymous
lulubeans
marion’s arts and crafts
pieces of string too small to save
sarah’s homestead blog
and i’m expecting to see much more spinning from yarnbee.

wow! i really felt as if i wouldn’t have ten, and then i did. what about you all – spinners out there – any favorite spinning blogs? i always feel there are way more knitting blogs that i read than spinning blogs and i’ve a sneaking suspicion that those of us who produce fiber often fall into the blog as ad category. my other thing is that i’m more interested in those who sometimes knit with their own handspun rather than just selling roving and yarn… but i’ll take whatever you can give me!

the yarn from this entry is some of the yarn mentioned in the previous post. i feel like i’ve been doing enough spinning to not only improve, but come to some decisions of what sort of yarns i’d like to sell. one decision down. the other decision i’m fighting with is whether or not i name the yarn? and if i ever move on to selling roving… do i name the roving? i know that knitters like colorways to be named, but i may not have the energy to do the naming of hats and yarns and roving – especially since i don’t really repeat colorways! i’m trying to stay away from tedious :) on the other hand, i’ve also asked people over on flickr what they think things should be named and that has worked rather well.

what do you all think? i think i’ll go label these pics ‘name me’ on flickr now… but for the future i’m unsure. any advice would be well taken. have a great monday!

what memory am i?

spinning and snowing

January 27, 2008

spin spin spin

there has been a lot of spinning happening chez cosy during the last month. after this dyeing day, i went to work getting it all spun up. i found screws and put together my ashford traditional and my country spinner is currently with a very nice gentleman for some repairs to see if we can get it up and running. it would be great for plying if nothing else. the yarn itself (due to be at the ‘i made it’ on february 9th, then into the etsy shop) is currently in a cascade across a good portion of the yarn room, but i promise to scoop it up and take some photos soon. i’m very pleased with the improvement of my spinning skills.

i have also been teaching spinning lessons like crazy and did a couple of spinning demos for the store on a loaner louet victoria that louet sent us. the last two classes i’ve had made me feel like there may be some new spinning addicts out there. just in time for pittsburgh knit and crochet!

just a note to those in town – you may want to stop by and try this wheel while we have it. it’s only 6 lbs! a very nice little spin. i always jump at the chance to try different wheels, so i thought i’d extend the invite :)

there’s enough room at the shop (indeed, they encourage such things) and lots of new spinners created by my classes, so i thought it only right that i start a spinning group (GEESH! so much spinning). every third saturday of the month at the store. one o’clock until we all leave (they close at five). i will mostly be there… but may not once in a while. the first one was fabulous!

and the last of the spinning news, i got a bunch of wool from these sheep. pictures will follow including the names.

now i’ll spend the next week catching up on photos from this entry :)

p.s. if you won something in the blogiversary contest, it should be going out on monday!

turn of the century

January 26, 2008

when i found out that my friend vivian had knitting/crocheting tools made by her grandfather and great-grandfather, i asked if she would bring them in to show me so i could blog about them. she estimates them at around the turn of the century into the early 1900s. a few of the embroidery hoops might not be handmade.

commissional hats

January 25, 2008

so. i’ve finished a few commissions lately.

pussy willow tam, take 2

pussy willow tam - take 2

ingredients:
mountain colors hand dyed wool – weaver’s quarters

back in december one of my customers on etsy emailed me this very sad story:

i bought the pussy willow tam hat from you last year and loved it. it was my favorite hat and i think my dog knew that so on a day when she was particularly angry with me for leaving she decided to eat it. the weather is turning cold and i find myself wishing i had my beloved hat. i was wondering if you are taking any custom orders and if you might be able to knit me a hat reminiscent of my old favorite.

so this is the tam to replace the old tam.

golden delicious hat

golden delicious hat - front

ingredients:
recycled sweater wool (with a bit of nylon)
my hand dyed recycled sweater wool
a bit of new wool/mohair

size: adult small – you can tell it doesn’t fit my adult medium head the best

golden delicious hat - side

this one was based on a baby hat i made which the person really liked – both in shape and color. this was actually closer than i usually come to duplicating a project because i happened to still have some of the yellow left and i really liked both the color and texture of it.  now i’m hankering to play more with yellow/green combo.

golden delicious hat - embellished

two commissions in queue right now – a shawl made out of recycled sweater wool/alpaca/acrylic on the needles and a pair of mittens soon to be on the needles. once those are done, onward to another pair of outdoorsman mitts for my dad’s friend and some organ playing mitts for one of ben’s classmates.

tally ho!  i’ve also got some super secret knitting work that i’m hoping i can tell you all about soon – but i’ve got to wait till i hear from the higher ups.

chrismas is over

January 22, 2008

that’s what my roommate maggie’s aunt called to tell her the other day. and that is what i am telling you now – although i do still owe my other roommate a hat. his will come later. so i took my sabbath last week (friday now) to finish up my christmas gifts.

for my mother-in-law, spun from this – tussah and camel. she bought the roving – it’s her colors and she loves the luxury yarns, and it’s certainly that.

tussah/camel

i’m thinking she’ll make a smoke ring out of it. because of the slippiness of the roving, i had to do some figuring to see how much spin was needed to make a single. it was a learning experience. it may have its thick and thin spots, but it is in fact a very balanced yarn. perhaps my most balanced single to date – not even – just balanced. i am of the balancedish but not fragile school of thought.

tussah/camel

for one of my brothers-in-law – the bottom is from the lusekofte hat from Charlene’s Schurch’s brilliant book Hats On! i didn’t think he’d like the top, so i changed to a different top from another of the hats in the book, then it was wrong (no errata of course). grrr. then i made it up. turned out fine. i think he’ll like it.

jeremiah's hat

ingredients:
cascade 220
my hand dyed wool (i think grey that had been over-dyed)

size: jeremiah. largish.

my apple hood

January 21, 2008

i made this baby last tuesday – just in time for the frigid weather we are now having. i needed something to cover up my wet hair in the mornings for the walk to work and it works like a charm. ah, the wonders of wool. i’m now working on adapting it into a pattern – although it definitely needs some re-working.* now if only i can conspire to get back to montana where they have real snow for me to play in. sigh.

my apple hood (to wear with my red coat :) as so)

my apple hood

the back

my apple hood - back

specs:
my hand dyed handspun wool
size 10.5 US needles – probably could have used a 9, but didn’t have one on hand
really much more varied in its greenness and very much granny smith – less golden delicious
buttons – glass from my grandmother’s stash. they were on my aunt’s clothes when she was little

my apple hood - flat

i also got new glasses! i joke that it’s the first time you can see my eyes since the 5th grade – but really, since i was 18. 12 years. i love the non reflective lenses. (if you look really closely, you can tell that my eyes are slightly different shades of brown.)

new glasses!

so. i wore floral tights to work the other day – and they weren’t even very wild floral tights… dark blue background, orange, white, yellow flowers. however, on my way to work, nobody made eye contact with me. no matter what age or gender, they all stared at my tights. i would think it might have had something to do with them walking up hill and me walking down i thought… but later on in the day i went across the street to mail something and while waiting to cross back a woman driving by didn’t only stare, but swiveled her head and watched the tights as long as she could. now i’m thinking i’ll be even more over stimulating in my green hood, red wool coat, and strange glasses. they’re really not going to know what to look at. maybe i should wear floral tights too ;)

it’s nice to have this blog back to a woolie day-to-day journal for a bit – the pattern series and the blogiversary one after another leaves me with much to show you because, of course, the knitting, spinning, and other fiber endeavors did not stop! i’ll try to get to more soon, although it’s a busy week with an organ concert to go to and 2 spinning classes on top of the regularly scheduled events. have a good week!

*confession – i’m actually working on several adult sized hood/bonnet/pixie hat patterns… must perfect… must play…
