embellished up

November 16, 2007

it’s snowing this morning!!! light fluffy blowy different sized snow. makes me happy.

now to business – three old hats made new.

and the embellishment – i was trying to make it look like it had something to do with the sea still. i’m not sure that i succeeded, but i do like it. kind of wild.

and the embellishment – didn’t think this one needed anymore than a button.

and one really old one – strawberries and cream hat. the most accurate coloring is from the linked picture. it’s a really bright hat.

and the embellishment – this button is exquisite. i’m almost sad to see it go. it kind of makes me think of aliens for some reason :)

percolation

November 15, 2007

it has been a week of cosy as a coffee maker. i tend towards being a percolator anyhow… but this week has been exceptional for constantly planning the next steps. sometimes i couldn’t sleep because my brain was going. even though i was sick and therefore relaxing, i was still at work.

here are my current thoughts on where my business should go

1) start selling my spinning at craft fairs, and maybe even my dyeing. with that in mind, on monday, while sick and grumpy i managed to figure out what was wrong with my spinning wheel and fix it! it had been having problems before we moved and i finally figured it out! hurrah!

here’s the culprit (a piece i didn’t even know came apart!)…

together

and here she is apart. it was gunky on the inside.

apart

that’s what i get for having a one-of-a-kind (as far as we know…) spinning wheel – lots of guess and check. this new discovery also means that i can now get new bobbins made for this wheel, which is also exciting.

so of course i’ve been spinning. one skein is too ugly to mention, because it is heading to be over dyed, but here are a couple i did in the last few days.

new wools

i dyed them all. expect better shots once washed. on that front, i also may have found someone to fix my country spinner (and maybe make me new bobbins for the little wheel?) and a farm nearby where i can get wool processed. i don’t want to say too much because who knows how fast any of this will finally get done, but things are looking up and, frankly, it feels so good to be spinning on my wheel again.

things i don’t know yet – i’m not so sure if i’m going to sell handspun on-line, but there is the ‘i made it’ market every month or every other month. i’m also not concrete about pricing of handspun yet… although with a little more percolation…

as to dyeing, i have now figured out the ins and outs of our household and when the best time to dye is, so i should be getting more of that done. that’s on the back burner right now.

2) start writing up colorwork patterns – thus the mosaic from last entry. the non-colorwork hats seem to sell better than the colorwork ones do at fairs, but i have lots of interest in the colorwork ones as patterns. i’m also planning other patterns, but i’ll start with the colorwork ones.

3) embellish on everything. it’s what sells. so these hats will now be embroidered (or something) – hopefully by monday which is my next show.

to be

4) lastly, i want to teach – it’s in my blood and my nature. i’d like to offer things like ripping apart sweaters for yarn, beginning and group knitting, maybe teach some of my own patterns etc. and i’m currently not entirely sure how to go about it. i contacted a local yarn store about my own patterns, so that may work out. i thought about running an ad on craigslist?!? input? maybe i should flier :)

any comments and feedback would be great. thank you all in advance and thanks for sticking with the blog through all of this crazy business stuff. i hope to get back to ranting about wool and other misc. things very soon.

handmade arcade rundown

November 14, 2007

as promised, i took no pictures… but handmade arcade was brilliant. i had maybe two silly people, everyone else was fabulous. when they opened the doors on saturday, it was like flood gates. sunday wasn’t nearly as good, but i think my view was skewered because i was in the process of getting sick. that compounded with a place that is freezing cold and no hoards to distract me may have lead to a bit of discontent. how good was it? so good that several vendors didn’t even come for sunday because they sold out!

here’s my rundown of silly things
unexpected: people asking for manly square hats!!!
interesting: old hardcover books being made into purses – ben was particularily fond of wuthering heights
missing: fiber! to the dismay of all of my knitting friends. also, not much jewelry and no ceramics!
first things gone from my table: the manly mitts. i guess i’ll be making more of those!!
most pleasurable: besides the food (chai cupcakes, franktuary veggie dogs, and hummus with assorted veggies and pitas), my favorite part was seeing my baby and kid hats on heads. so fun!
funny comment: one lady thought for sure that squids and octopuses must have some deep hidden meaning because they were EVERYWHERE there. i reassured her that it was just pop culture.
seen bobbling through the crowd: amazing balloon creatures (car, butterfly, anything complicated you can think of, it was made)

my purchase – one skein of squishy yummy merino by cityspun, the only yarnie person there.

cityspun

ben bought me this vintage slip dress by lavender zebra press for my birthday.

lavender zebra press

it is handy that both of our birthdays are around major craft fair season! we also picked up a couple of small items for christmas.

i learned from this that my business is most probably viable (yay!) and that there are no spinners selling their yarns in pittsburgh. cityspun used to be here, but is now in lancaster. that’s a gap i may just need to fill!!! pronto. more on that later this week. the only bad thing is that she described spinning in pittsburgh as ‘lonely’ :( although, i’ve offered to teach anyone who wants to learn from my knit one groups and they seem keen, so i see that changing.

i also got another craft fair from being at handmade, which is great. my next two craft fairs are benefits for organizations – the first for the shadyside women’s hospital auxiliary (Nov 19th) and the second for the cc mellor library (Dec 1st). kind of glad i didn’t sell everything :)

ups and downs

November 13, 2007

i’m sick (right after handmade of course) but i decided that i should not leave all of you in blogland hanging about the outcomes.

first – handmade arcade went very well. more on that tomorrow. it was lovely to meet everyone who stopped by to say ‘hi’ – i’m kind of sad that i didn’t get more time to chat. welcome to all who found this blog via handmade!

second – although i generally answer most comments via email, you may not get an email answer if you’ve commented in the last week. several things happened in order to make the email a bit crazy… simultaneous posting of both this entry (which has new responses by the day still!!!) with a list of people with the most projects tagged handspun on ravelry has sent many new people this way. two days ago, i had my all time high visitage of 460 hits! welcome to all of you ravelers!!

tomorrow, if i’m feeling better, i hope to do a real blog entry on handmade and i’ll leave you with this mosaic which should give you a hint of some of my future plans for the biz!

the rundown

November 9, 2007

here’s the table we came up with – it’s overwhelming, as always. i get asked a lot about my choice to use bright table cloths under my knit goods – and frankly, i think it adds to the charm :) against all of the experts advice though. this table is two feet shorter than my actual table, so there will be a bit more space to spread tomorrow.

practice table for handmade arcade

there are notes on the above picture over on flickr telling you where these signs are

new signage

old sign

and here’s what i have:
26 adult sized hats
7 18 mo.-4 yr hats
7 6-18 mo. hats
7 0-6 mo. hats
3 pairs of mittens
5 pairs of fingerless mitts
9 neck warmers
20 snow bunnies

if there’s anything i regret, it’s the amount of fingerless mitts. i’ve been intimidated by other methods of making fingerless mitts that can be sold cheaper at craft fairs, and so have focused on my hats. i’ve noticed recently that mine have been selling pretty well and wish i had more like 10 pairs. ah well, next time. and it seems lucky i don’t have more since they won’t fit on the table!!!

pushing the red wheelbarrow

November 9, 2007

you all are hilarious! ben and i really enjoyed reading through your comments and for that reason i highly recommend you go back and read any you haven’t read as of yet! for your convenience, they’re here. and next time you are told of someone wanting to find out why young people are knitting, just send them here – we’ll take care of them ;)

more snow bunnies!

in other news, i’ve been nominated for a makes me smile award

smileaward.jpg

and that makes me smile :) the lovely blogger who nominated me runs the ‘knitbeast’ blog which i’ve been enjoying for a couple of months now. it’s even more fun when it’s mutual – thank you!!! and in turn i suppose i should nominate some people. currently, these blogs are making me smile – barefoot rooster, do stuff!, tiny happy, pipe dreams and purling plans, and pea soup. go check them out and i hope they make you smile too.

snow bunnies!

if you haven’t noticed, my work for the last day or two is done – 20 snow bunnies. i highly recommend clicking over to flickr and clicking the ‘all sizes’ button above each picture because texture is one of the greatest things about these. two of them use some pretty serious angora.

snow bunnies again!

yesterday i inventoried and tagged. today we will be working on the table set up and packing everything up so i’m ready to go tomorrow. i’ll leave you with a shot of my favorite snow bunnies

my favorite snow bunnies!

which i have labeled with notes on flickr as to their fiber content… and a pic of me wearing my current favorite shade of green. ah, the lovely double chin which matters not to me today. if you’re coming to handmade, i’ll see you tomorrow! i’ll be the girl eying the red wheelbarrow with skepticism and anticipation.  oh, and i’ll have a lot of knits for sale.

post number three – the trib – why knit?

November 8, 2007

third post of the day!! i think this newspaper might be a bit behind :) but there i am at knit one last thursday.

blog

it always surprises me when some new media outlet notices. i’ve been knitting 5 years and back when i started articles like this existed and now they still exist. not very observant are they? quoting the Craft Yarn Council of America 2002, 2004 stats doesn’t really make them look any more with it…

this particular article claims that we ‘youthful’ ones (24-35 year olds) knit because (second paragraph of the piece) celebrities do it. i don’t know about you all, but i only do what celebrities do)…  there were more reasons, but that was their up front one.

they interviewed maybe two people who was actually in the focus age group… otherwise, it’s just people talking about ‘us’ and although we at knit one got our pics in the paper, we were not interviewed at all (and many of us were target age group). we are being observed, not talked to y’all.

my husband is considering writing a letter to the editor about this one – not all angry or anything. mostly playfully pointing out their incongruities and such. we are mightily amused.

so, all you hip young knitters – do tell! why do you knit? wait, better yet – whoever you are because i hate the false dichotomy between the ages that is so prevalent in the craft world, if you’re a knitter, why do you knit? maybe we’ll use your answers in our letter to the editor.

at least they spelled my name right :)
