grandma fixings

September 17, 2007

while i was home in missoula, my grandmother not only gave me her button stash, but also some other bits and bobbles including this

grandma's crayon flapper hat - embellishment

which looks to me like it belongs on a 1980s wedding dress. she was going to use it around the collar of a sweater, but never got around to it. what would i do with it? put it on a hat of course! i knew all along that this hat would need white embellishment and then this came along. great timing. the whole time i was knitting this one, i couldn’t get our of my head that the colors look like an orange crayon and a carnation pink crayon melted together. i also think that the colors are kind of ugly, but every time i’ve said that so far i’ve been strongly contradicted – so pretty she is. here’s a modeled shot

grandma's crayon flapper hat

ingredients:
my hand dyed recycled sweater wool
grandma’s glitz

adult size medium

i tacked the flowers down all of the way and leaves down only part way so that they flap a bit. i may need to reinforce.

and just because i think it’s funny, i took a great angled sideways shot that showed off both the shape of the hat and the embellishment – and after thinking it was so great, i noticed that i had a horrific double chin :) i love that i notice the knitting first

anyhow, friday and saturday i also got in a bit of sabbath knitting. fall has suddenly come upon us here in pittsburgh and what better way to celebrate than a new pair of mittens? my sabbath knitting for this week was a return to these mittens. when i started them, i had no idea who i was making them for, but since i kept this hat and they go together well enough – they’re for me! here’s the first one, thumbless, in all its glory in the cool crisp autumn morn. i’ve started the second one also. i figure i’ll do the thumbs at the end.

job description

September 15, 2007

the roving from this post, done on my drop spindle slightly before the move, during the cross country trip and while we were here, but still homeless. they’re smallish amounts, but i love them and i’m sure i’ll find a good use for them. i’m just as enamored with them in yarn form as in roving. i love it when that happens.

notice how i’ve dropped the hat a day thing? it was a good motivator for about a week :) i suppose one reason that i like fiber arts so much is that it is so varied. i can dye, spin, knit, rip apart sweaters, or embellish. such a nice multi-layered job and i rarely feel stuck doing one thing. and i guess i’d rather not be stuck talking about one thing either… so back to normal.

knitting pantoum

September 14, 2007

my friend sarah milligan is teaching a creative writing course where they are currently doing form poems. her students thought she should write her poems about knitting, so she did. this one is a pantoum. I recommend reading it out loud so that you can get the full feel for the rhythm. anyone up for writing their own? tee hee.

thanks sarah!

Over, under, up above,
Needles fly, yarn held taut,
Working on this woolen glove,
Finishing, my only thought.

Needles fly, yarn held taut,
Knitting now upon a finger,
Finishing, my only thought–
On this project, I won’t linger.

Knitting now upon a finger,
Picking up and going round–
On this project, I won’t linger–
Quiet clicks, the only sound.

Picking up and going round,
Hoping that my yarn will last,
Quiet clicks the only sound,
Trying hard to just knit fast.

Hoping that my yarn will last,
Working on this woolen glove,
Trying hard to just knit fast:
Over, under, up above.

just so that you know, sarah was in fact knitting gloves when she wrote this poem and she did run out of yarn with just a few rows left in the thumb. we feel for you sarah.

pirate sack hat

September 13, 2007

i’m feeling pulled in all directions today, so expect a disjointed blog post.

peacock tail sack hat

first, the hat i knit yesterday while at my first ever major league sports event – the pirates vs the brewers. i tried to embroider a skull and cross bones or something vaguely pirateish on it, but it didn’t work for me. so, i’m dubbing this design the pirate sack hat, although this hat itself is the peacock feathers sack hat.

peacock tail sack hat - front

ingredients:
my hand dyed handspun wool plied with some i spun from a batt from black cat handspun
the pink fuzzy stuff is mohair from said batt
more specifically – the third and the fifth skein seen here, reading from left to right:

variations on the blues

embroidered with old navy recycled sweater wool
button from the stash

adult medium. i’m very proud to say that this is another hat that looks okay not pulled down to the eyebrows… in fact it is made to be worn up a bit on the forehead, yet still cover the ears. and, if you want to see what rovings the grey and the green came from, you can peruse such things over at my all things spinning set on flickr. i try to keep rovings with yarns with finished knit as best i can. i also have another process set for my hand dyed wool if you’re interested.

peacock tail sack hat - flat

Secondly, someone made the old shale smoke ring and two people on ravelry have started knitting the train tam. i’m always nervous when people start knitting my patterns because i very much want their projects to turn out. so far so good on the smoke ring, we’ll see on the tam.

third, i’m back working on some book stuffs… as in sending large amounts of yarn, recycled sweaters, knitting needles etc. to my publisher for pictures. i think it’s very exciting that they’ll be using the actual stuff that i used to make the patterns because i always envisioned the book as inviting people into my living room to knit. on the other hand, i’ll certainly have to buy duplicates of some of my needles because they’ll have them until february!

lastly, news about the etsy shop. i’ll be putting back up a couple of items a week and if you buy in the months of september/august and mention that you saw this special on my blog, i’ll give you either free shipping or 10% off, whichever makes more sense.  if you have seen something you really want and want me to put it up in the shop, send me an email and i’ll oblige. arrgh matey. the peacock waves goodbye.

two handy things

September 12, 2007

i made it into the handmade arcade!!! yipee! i’m ecstatic.

and here are some newly finished mittens that i’ve dubbed the pea shoot mittens:

pea shoot mittens

the embroidery reminded me of a community garden plot that alissa and i had one year. one day, beautiful little pea shoots had started coming up, the next day something, presumably a rodent of some sort, had eaten them all.

ingredients:
donegal tweed homespun (purchased last saturday at knit one)
my hand dyed recycled sweater wool/angora
cascade 220
embroidered with my hand dyed recycled sweater wool

fitted women’s medium, they’d probably be fine on small too.

pea shoot mittens

sorry for all of the similar pictures, but i’m trying to give you an overall feel for the embroidery on them. it didn’t show up well in any of the photos and the colors aren’t quite the right shade of green.

pea shoot mittens

these are what i worked on yesterday while knitting at knit one and i ended up having to rip out a lot because i messed up. another good reason to write down what you’re doing while doing the first one. now you know one of the reasons i usually do hats :)

i wrote down the pattern for next time.

downpour

September 11, 2007

hat number five. we indeed awoke to a downpour and it is still very loudly downpouring outside (as in i can barely hear my roommates talk because the windows are open).

downpour hat - embroidery

and these pictures were taken during a downpour, so i had to take a gagillion just to get these three

and so this is the downpour hat

ingredients:
mountain colors mill ends
green-blue my hand dyed recycled sweater wool
embroidery – lamb’s pride

size – 6-18 mo.

downpour hat

one of my favorite techniques when it comes to roll brim hats is to disrupt the brim in some way. on this one, i used extra embroidery to make part of the brim flatter than the rest. i *love* these colors together. they are, of course, richer in person – but this is the best i could do in a downpour :)

downpour hat - above

i hope the rain stops some time today because i’m planning to go to the knitting store to try out a knitting group this afternoon. i guess i could just take my umbrella or wear my goretex…

prairie grass train tam

September 10, 2007

prairie grass train tam

the original train tam from this post done up.

ingredients:
my hand dyed thrifted wool
embroidered with some wool my mom bought at a garage sale

prairie grass train tam

and there has been more stash enhancement (can you believe more than once in a week?). before we came to pittsburgh i noticed a listing on craigslist labeled ‘high quality yarn $2.’ of course, we weren’t here yet so i didn’t email. but the other day, while looking for furniture, i typed in yarn again and it was still there, so i emailed.

yesterday afternoon i walked over and looked through a lovely crafter’s yarn stash and came home with a gigantic bag full of wool. she is moving into a smaller house, working more on jewelry than weaving and knitting and so had to part with some of her stash. these were just the first cuts. it was fun, and while i dug we chatted, then she gave me a ride home. anyhow, i took select pictures of some of the wools over on flickr. there is also a lot of white and gray for me to dye over and some of the yarns in quantities large enough for sweaters! and she wasn’t at all afraid of very sheepy, rough wool. overall, she had a good variety. that’s my kind of fiber artist. we may get together and have tea.

p.s. i left behind a bunch of nice weaving wools on cones. if anyone’s interested, contact me!

enabler

September 8, 2007

yup. that’s what my husband is. those of you who know me know that i don’t buy yarn much, and when i do it’s a single skein here and there mostly to expand my palette for the business. i’m more of a person who aquires yarn :)

so, today, when i went to knit one for their anniversary celebration/sale i might have bought one or two skeins, but ben was with so i came out with five!!! true, all were on sale in some way shape or form. here they are in all of their glory.

one skein navy blue donegal tweed homespun for the biz stash:

donegal tweed homespun

this picture of malabrigo does not do it justice. it’s my first skein of malabrigo ever and i’m super excited. not sure what i’ll use it for:

malbrigo chunky

colinette jitterbug which i’ve also wanted to try forever – destined to be some socks for yours truly:

jitterbug

and lastly some rowan scottish tweed 4 ply – it was 1) pretty and 2) on sale:

rowan scottish tweed

i also told them about the book and it appears like i may have somewhere to do a signing! fun! i met many of the people who are regulars there too… it was very welcoming and might be a good place to go sit and knit. and lastly, ben and i ate infamous giant eagle cake (that’s the local grocery store). it’s all the rage around here. one thing i’ve come to love about pittsburgh already is that there are still many things that are uniquely pittsburgh. last night we ate mineo’s pizza and drank some locally made cherry soda. mmmm.
