all set up!

April 16, 2007

after a very chaotic morning that almost made me laugh.  no pics of it today, but i promise some thursday.  i also handed in my two papers.

and it looks like i’ll be selling recycled wool, hand dyed recycled wool, and handspun yarn also.

have i mentioned that i’ve never done that before? and i have no idea how to price such an endeavor… i guess i better learn quick. i’ve got my work cut out for me for the next two days!

p.s. i’ve managed to loose one of the lithuanian socks in my house.  i refuse to go into a panic and dig through everything, so i suppose if i don’t find it there will only be one in the show.  i’m stressed out enough as is!

ribbed scarf

April 16, 2007

ingredients:
three balls of mountain colors wool, all slightly different
very wide and very long
size 8 straight metal needles

based on a description of old scarves, really wide but not quite as long as theirs. the description said that people would put it over their ears, wrap it around their neck and throw it back over their shoulders. i did take some photos and i cannot really imagine that looking good on anyone. so yes. big, long, warm scarf that i like wearing this way. i still can’t help but feel that it’s more like a stole (except that i made it ribbed). perhaps it is somewhere in the middle.  either way, glad to be done with it and have the pictures taken.

booklets and extra time in the gallery

April 14, 2007

almost done with them – just the historical pieces to go! and pretty much done with the papers too. now to make a huge pile of all of the stuff that needs to go to the gallery on monday… (including furniture…)

for the curious, the title of my paper is “Speaking Eloquently on Behalf of Wool: Knitting as a Relevant Focal Practice for the Modern World”

and lastly, i’d like to thank everyone for their support, interest, and kind comments over the course of this project.  i usually email responses back when i get comments, but for these last few posts before the project goes up i won’t have time.  plus, i fear we’ll have all forgot what we said before i get around to it.  so, your words are taken to heart and thank you!

UPDATE:  I’ll also be in the gallery on friday morning around 10 if anyone can’t make the opening and wants to chat with me about the exhibit!

thesis show write up

April 13, 2007

this is what will be in the gallery booklet for people to take home with them.

I Reclaim: Knitting as Theological Reflection

In knitting I reclaim a lost domestic art that reaffirms family and home. I reclaim the idea that what we do daily and the items that we surround ourselves with are important and affect the quality of our lives.

I reclaim a rich tradition of provision, beauty, and care that has been passed down through the generations, as knitted garments and patterns are passed from hand to hand.

I reclaim the good gifts of God in natural fibers and use them to good ends that glorify Him. I spin wool from sheep. I recycle sweaters that have had too little thought put into their manufacture and create from them new, lively beauty.

And lastly, I reclaim for myself and for my neighbors, students, and friends the image of God given to us by a good creator ‘to make’ and be creative creatures ourselves. I nestle myself into Genesis one, reaffirming and revitalizing my relationships with God, His earth, and other people.

melanie’s visit in fiber

April 12, 2007

there has been some fibery stuff going on over here (besides granny square blocking). this photo is of some recent book knitting, mostly done on transit while tooling around with melanie.

there was also a very important finished knit – the last thesis knit! more about that when i get a human in the picture. we introduced melanie to miyazaki films by watching a whole slew.

thrifting, of course, includes thrifting sweaters. on our little jaunt up north tuesday i got a lot of sweater ripping done. that fluffy live looking sweater is a very high percentage of angora and is almost painful to touch because it is a way too soft. i’m vacillating in between dyeing it (which i will probably do) and selling it without so that i don’t have to touch it anymore. the good/bad thing is that it looses a bit of the angora when ripped – good because it’s a wee bit more manageable, bad because there are angora fluffs everywhere and on everyone (bad if you’re ben and melanie, amusing if you’re me).

there has also been some etsy mailings and some handspun washing on the side.

she also managed to buy a hat from me and commission me for another.

there was even a bit of booklet writing. now, my dear friends, i must work on that dang paper.

pour vous

April 9, 2007

here’s the top view. in case you were wondering about me being less wordy and less productive over the last few days, (besides it being easter) my friend melanie is visiting from atlanta. today we are going thrifting and i think i’ll look for another platter for the rest of the colors.

i did finish the scarf!  it took a lot of movies. hurrah! if i like it unblocked you may get pics when we go on a small road trip tomorrow. if not, right before the show.

saddest thing ever

April 7, 2007

cause you know, it’s good friday and that’s not sad or anything. okay. i may be over-dramatic.

these are my socks that rock socks and my first hole in a knit good. they will be darned, but probably with a different color (i used the rest to make these- there might be a little ball floating around somewhere). i certainly don’t feel like i’ve been wearing these very long or all that much. the yarn was a gift from my lovely friend pamela… sadness.

i am wondering if people think that a little bit of felting might have made these stick together better. i always hand-washed them instead of machine washing them anyhow – so is superwash all it’s cracked up to be? i don’t know. anyone? maybe wool with a bit of nylon would have been better?

on another note, i wouldn’t be wearing these right now anyhow because it has suddenly become crazy warm and nice in vancouver! it’s humid too and i haven’t quite figured out how to change my wardrobe – it seems like i have to figure it out every year. i always go out wearing too much clothing and end up carrying it all around with me.  enough with the complaining though, it’s beautiful.  sigh.  flowers will be one reason to miss vancouver.  i could walk around looking at flowers forever.

a good days thrifting

April 5, 2007

i volunteered today.

see on the left hand side, the not yarn or pottery stuff? that, my friends, is wool and silk roving. i’ve never found roving in a thrift store before. the tag says it’s from the the silk worker and i got two bags of it! so fun. as far as i can tell it’s crazy teal wool with blue, peach, and yellow silk. yay!

the other yarns are wool. i also got a bunch more of the weird grey/teal stuff in the upper right hand corner. lots of teal today…

the platter – handmade of course. to be used in the show to hold some of the grannies. i’m thinking the greens and blues.

for the last two days i have been knitting and knitting and knitting on the 3 by 3 ribbed scarf (it’s quite large) which is the last piece for the show. TEDIOUS. tedious. tedious. gracious, i can’t wait until it’s done. i’d almost rather work on reworking my paper (which i also still have to do…), but no. i’m off to knit.
