ingredients:
dark green- lamb’s pride 85% wool/15% mohair
neon- my hand dyed thrifted wool
light blue- my hand dyed thrifted wool

at first i started making something else with these three wools, but i had to stop because they really, really wanted to be colorwork. although fingerless mitts themselves are not a traditional knit, i opted for some very traditional colorwork, similar to the colorwork in this pattern. i’m actually knitting this pattern for the thesis also, so these mitts will be in the cluster with the socks.

i love simple colorwork. it makes the knit piece interesting color and pattern-wise while it also makes the fabric thick and warm. so simple and satisfying. some changes i would make – k2,p2 rib should have been k1,p1 because i wanted to use it at the top of the thumb too. however, i am quite pleased with the length over the fingers on these ones. i often make them too short. as with all my knits, they are their own singular creation… i refine every time. no two the same over here :).

on a side note, i’m intrigued by the fact that fingerless mitts actually help people to stay warm. my working theory is that it has something to do with the wrists. i also don’t think i believed in them until i started wearing my first pair. they seemed pointless.

i got to thinking about this more because the other night, i was at a meeting at the mennonite thrift store i volunteer at and my friend doreen was cold. i gave her my mitts to wear (she was skeptical, she’s always skeptical), but she felt warmer within a couple of minutes. who knew?

i really feel that craft is something that should be freely passed from person to person. it’s about community, sharing in something important, and creating something beautiful. for that reason, i consider it part of my thesis to teach spinning/dyeing/knitting for free to those in my community. we’ll see how that theory changes when i move next and need a job!

as to life in vancouver, i jokingly describe myself as a disease. this lovely woman, my most recently infected, is my friend amanda. on mondays i go knit at her house while she paints. in this unclear photo she is drop spindling in her kitchen. we spin a bit too- drink tea, ward off her cats, etc.
